By all accounts, Moses’s time on Mt. Sinai with God was wonderous. Paul tells that when Moses came down from the mountain, his face was still so bright with the reflection of God’s glory that he wore a veil so that followers could bear to look at him. No wonder he used the name, “El Haggadol” or “The Great God” when sharing what was revealed in the encounter. Notice it is a compound name, beginning with “El” as in “Elohim.”
In urging the Hebrews to love God and obey Him, Moses lists several qualities of this great God:
- He is the owner of everything in Heaven and Earth.
- He is supreme over other gods and lords.
- He is honest and just.
- He is a miracle worker.
- He is a multiplier.
- He chose the Hebrews and their children from all the people groups of the earth.
Do you see other characteristics of God in today’s passage? What response does He require of us?
Clearly there are benefits as well as responsibilities to serving El Haggadol!
