Jehovah Jireh – The Lord Will Provide
God has proved Himself to be my provider more times than I can count. He has made a way for me when there was no visible way out of my mess—often a mess I foolishly created for myself. The name “Jehovah Jireh” implies that not only will God provide, but He knows what we need and has made provision before we even ask (Matthew 6:32).
The man who coined the name had a real reason to rejoice. When asked by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac, Abraham dutifully obeyed. Trekking up mount Moriah, toting wood for the altar, Isaac wondered where was the customary lamb? Dad assured him that they would find the animal at the place for the offering. After he had bound his son and laid him on top of the wood, he lifted the knife to kill him. At that moment the angel of the Lord called out to stop him and Abraham looked up to see a ram stuck in the thicket. He named the spot “Jehovah Jireh.” God did indeed provide.
Such an odd story, isn’t it? Horrifying really. More so when you realize that God demanded a price be paid for sin and that no ram suddenly appeared when His only Son, Jesus, was placed on the cross to take our punishment. Jehovah Jireh saw my need for a Savior, and He paid the price in full.
